One sign of Spring is the return of local Lenten fish fries. Lent, the time of preparation before Easter, traditionally involves abstaining from indulgences or vices (for example chocolate, desserts, swearing). Lent is also an opportunity to fast, pray and prepare with some form of self-discipline. Abstaining from meat on Fridays is a long-standing Lenten tradition for many Christians, which is why Friday fish fries have become such a beloved seasonal staple.

Today, meatless Fridays have given way to local celebrations and fundraisers providing a variety of eat-in or take-out fried fish meals.
