ReFurnishings Thrift & Flip Challenge: DIY Event to Support Local Families in Crisis

/ / Community

If you’re a DIY enthusiast, we have a challenge that will put your skills to work while supporting families and children in crisis. Justice for Orphans, a Ravena-based charity, is launching the ReFurnishings Thrift & Flip Challenge—an innovative and sustainable event aimed at helping children and families in need.

As part of the challenge, participants will transform secondhand furniture or décor into unique, up-cycled pieces. These creations will then be auctioned to support the organization’s mission to inspire, educate, and equip families, churches, businesses, and community members to care for vulnerable children.

The challenge kicks off on Saturday, March 22 when participants will choose their flip piece at Refurnishings between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The challenge will culminate in a public reception and live auction at The Wire event center in Coxsackie on May 4, from 2-5 p.m.

You can help by signing up to flip a piece of furniture or decor by March 20. You can also support Justice for Orphans and families and children in crisis by attending the reception and auction on May 4. Light refreshments will be served. Finally, businesses can support the event by becoming sponsors.

Sandra Flach, founder of Justice for Orphans, emphasized that this event is about more than just furniture flipping. “It’s about flipping lives,” Flach said in a quote about the event in the Ravena News Herald. “Each item sold will helpfund essential programs for children and families in need. We encourage the community to get involved by participating, sponsoring, or attending the auction.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the charity’s CarePortal program, which provides furniture and household items to families working to reunite with children in foster care or prevent placement in foster care. CarePortal has assisted more than11,000 children in the Capital Region since Justice for Orphans’s launch in Schenectady County in 2018. Justice for Orphans now administers CarePortal in nine upstate New York Counties.
