As the seasons change in Upstate New York, so do our skincare needs. For this edition of our Discover RCS “Ask the Expert” series, we sat down with local esthetician Taylor Dedrick, owner of The Artistry Angel.

A mom of two young children, Taylor recently returned to her hometown after spending several years living out of state. Now back in the RCS community, she’s helping clients feel confident in their skin through customized skincare treatments and expert guidance.

We asked Taylor her top tips for transitioning your skincare routine from winter to spring.

What should people change in their skincare routine as we transition from winter to spring in Upstate New York?

Taylor: “Your skin is coming out of survival mode. Winter tends to dehydrate the skin and slow everything down, so spring is the perfect time to rebalance. I usually recommend lightening up on heavier creams, gently reintroducing exfoliation, and focusing on hydration that actually penetrates the skin instead of just sitting on top.”

As temperatures rise and humidity increases, your skin’s needs change. Spring is a great time to evaluate your products and adjust your routine accordingly.

What are the most common skin concerns you see in the spring and how can people prevent them?

Taylor: “In the spring, I see a lot of congestion, breakouts, and overall dullness. We’re sweating a little more, oil production starts ramping back up, and all that buildup from winter can still be sitting on the skin.”

Her advice? Focus on keeping your skin clean, exfoliated, and balanced without overdoing it.

“Monthly facials can make a huge difference because we’re helping guide your skin through those seasonal changes. Professional exfoliation is often better than trying to figure it out yourself and accidentally damaging your skin barrier.”

Why is SPF especially important in the spring, even when it doesn’t feel like summer yet?

Taylor: “SPF in the spring is non-negotiable.”

Even on cooler or cloudy days, UVA and UVB rays continue to affect your skin. According to Taylor, increased sun exposure in spring can contribute to premature aging, fine lines, wrinkles, and unwanted pigmentation.

“The best anti-aging product in your routine is SPF,” she says. “It’s one of the easiest ways to protect your skin and prevent sun damage before it starts.”

What are the top three things people should add or remove from their skincare routine this spring?

Taylor’s spring skincare essentials are simple:

1. A Gentle Cleanser

A gentle cleanser helps remove dirt, oil, and impurities without stripping the skin. Taylor recommends choosing a product that supports your skin barrier, especially if you have sensitive skin.

2. A Lightweight Moisturizer

As the weather warms up, heavier winter creams may no longer be necessary. Switching to a lighter moisturizer can help keep skin hydrated without feeling greasy or clogging pores.

3. Daily SPF

If you’re only adding one thing to your routine this spring, make it sunscreen. Daily SPF helps protect against premature aging, sunspots, and long-term skin damage.
